RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University women's basketball team opened the regular season at home against Lynchburg College Friday night. The Pacers fell to the ODAC's preseason favorites, 91-37.
WPU couldn't find an answer to Lynchburg's press defense in the opening quarter and fell behind, 18-6, heading into the second. The Pacers turned it over 33 times, which led to 49 points at the other end for the Hornets. Lynchburg also got to the free-throw line 34 times and made 23 of them, while the Pacers went 4-12 at the stripe.
"They are a lengthy team and their press took us out of our comfort zone from the get go," said head coach
Kelly Johnson. "We knew they were going to be tough, and they certainly showed why they were picked to win their conference."
Freshman
Tenae McKinzie was the lone Pacer in double figures, scoring 11 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and a steal.
DeJah Cheatham made a pair from beyond the arc and scored eight points.
Alexis Armstrong scored three points and grabbed a game high eight rebounds.
Four players posted double figures for Lynchburg led by Charmaine Hairston's 14 points. Sammi Goldsmith finished with seven points, eight assists, four rebounds and four steals.
