WPU Women's Soccer Edged by Methodist

CARY, NC – The William Peace University women's soccer team returned to WakeMed Soccer Park Tuesday evening, where the Pacers fell to the Monarchs of Methodist University, 3-1.

After a scoreless first half, the Pacers (5-6-1, 3-3 USAS) broke through in the 48th minute when freshman Alyssa Gasperini found senior Mari Mitterling for her team-leading, fifth goal of the season. Mitterling ran onto the ball played by Gasperini, beat the keeper one-one-one and shielded off one final defender before pushing it into the back of the net. It was Mitterlings's third consecutive match with a goal and Gasperini's third assist this year, which is tops on the team.

The Pacers' lead was short lived though, as Methodist (6-4-4-1 USAS) scored three goals within a 2-minute span. Eryka Underwood connected with Taylor Cavasos in the 60th minute to knot things up, and then Deycasha Miller found Capri Clark to make it 2-1. Cavasos found Sara Snotherly a minute later to put the Monarchs ahead, 3-1.

"I'm very proud of our girls, and minus two minutes, I thought this was our best effort of the season," said head coach Keith Jenkins. "The ladies did a great job translating everything we worked on in training this week to the game…we had a chance to go up 2-0 but just couldn't quite hold on."

The WPU women's soccer team will be back at WakeMed Soccer Park this Friday, Sept. 9 at 6:00 p.m., as they host Division II opponent Chowan University.
