SWEET BRIAR, VA – The William Peace University women's soccer team traveled to play non-conference opponent Sweet Briar College Sunday afternoon, where they went on to beat the Vixens, 4-0.
Posting their second straight shutout, WPU improves to 5-5-1 this year, establishing a new program record for wins in a season. The Pacers also have eight additional chances to tack on to that total, starting with Methodist on Tuesday, as they jump back into conference play.
"It was a good win and setting a new standard for the program is always a positive, but we have a good chance to add a few more down the stretch," said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "I didn't think we played well in the first half, but I challenged them to step up their speed of play in the second half and they responded, so hopefully we can take that momentum into Tuesday."
Mari Mitterling scored for the second straight game, netting her third and fourth goals of the season. Mitterling struck first in the 6th minute on a breakaway goal, juking the keeper one-on-one for an easy finish. Mitterling gave the Pacers a 2-0 lead at the break, chipping it in over the keeper's head from beyond the 18-yard box in the 23rd.
WPU continued their attack in the second half, as
Amelia Melching scored her first goal of the season less than three minutes in, followed by
Lauren Lane's second goal of the season in the 82nd. The Pacers finished the game with a 26-3 shot advantage over Sweet Briar (0-6), with 17 of those 26 shots on target. The Pacers also held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The WPU women's soccer team is back at WakeMed Soccer Park for their match against the Monarchs on Tuesday. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
