CARY, NC – The William Peace University men's soccer team hosted Averett University Thursday night for their final regular season match of the season. They had an opportunity to clinch their first conference tournament berth in program history, but the Pacers couldn't scratch out a goal in the second half, ending their season with a 2-1 loss.
It was also senior night, as head coach
Caleb Husmann and the team had the distinct honor of recognizing the first graduate in the program's brief three year history,
Luis Reyes-Gomez.
"I hate it for Luis more than anything, but we left it all out on the field and put together maybe our best performance of the year," said Husmann. "Seasons end abruptly and it's especially disappointing when there's so much at stake, but we have plenty to be proud of."
Enrique Ochoa scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 37th minute, but the Pacers (2-16, 2-8 USAS) trailed 2-1 at halftime and just weren't able to capitalize in the second, despite a multitude of opportunities.
WPU looked stronger than they have all year in the attacking third. The Pacers outshot Averett by seven (19-12) and looked particularly strong in the second half with 12 shots to only three for the Cougars (6-11, 5-5 USAS). The Pacers' eight corner kicks were also twice as many as Averett took.
