Pacers' Comeback Comes up Short vs Meredith

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University volleyball team played their final home match of the season Tuesday night, hosting the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. WPU stormed back from a 2-0 deficit and pushed the match to a fifth set, but the Pacers fell just short of finishing off the comeback. 

It was also senior night, as head coach Kevin Daniels and the the Pacers recognized its class of three. Irvin recorded 11 digs, two service aces and two assists, while Davis notched 11 digs of her own and a block assist. Ivey showcased what she's done best over her four years at Peace with six block assists and a pair of block solos. She also had six kills.

Nicole Phillips racked up a career high 17 kills at a .306 clip, while Liana Solomon posted her fourth triple-double of the season with 23 assists, 16 digs, 10 kills, two  block assists and a service ace. Laura Bland finished with 12 kills, five digs, a block solo and a block assist. Tempest Frazier also had nine kills to go along with six block assists. Kennedey Paine notched 20 assists and seven digs. Carson Williams led the team with 23 digs and six assists.

WPU (18-12, 10-7, USAS) dropped the opening set, 25-19, and themselves a 17-7 hole they couldn't climb out of in the second. Meredith took the set, 25-21, but Peace grabbed the momentum with a late push. 

The Pacers finished the match with 14 total blocks and their 22 block assists ties the program's all-time single match record. They held Meredith to negative hitting percentages in the next two sets, as theywon the third set, 25-22, and tied things up with a 25-17 win in the fourth.

WPU got off to a quick 4-0 lead in the fifth and still led, 9-6. Meredith turned the tide with a 6-0 swing though and closed it out, 15-12.

The WPU volleyball team wraps up the regular season this Saturday with a conference quad-match in Rocky Mount. The Pacers face Averett University at 12:00 p.m., followed by Ferrum College at 2:00 p.m.
