ROCKY MOUNT, NC – The William Peace University volleyball team opened the day with a loss to Averett , but the Pacers bounced back with a four set win over Ferrum in their final regular season match of the year.
With the win, WPU (19-13, 11-8 USAS) clinched the North Division's fourth seed in next weekend's conference tournament, which will be hosted by Covenant College, the USA South's top overall seed. Ferrum (16-14, 10-9 USAS) fell to the no. five seed.
After being swept by Ferrum earlier in the year, the Pacers came out in dominating fashion, taking the first set, 25-9, followed by a 25-10 win in the second. Ferrum extended the match with a 25-17 win in the third and nearly took it to a fifth, but WPU held on to close it out in the fourth, 26-24.
Tempestt Frazier posted a team high 11 kills at a .364 clip along with a dig and two block assists.
Laura Bland finished with 10 kills and three block assists.
Nicole Phillips had nine kills, while
Liana Solomon recorded eight kills, 20 assists, four digs, two service aces and a block solo.
Lindsay Alford added seven kills, four digs and three block assists.
Kennedey Paine registered her third double-double of the year, leading the Pacers with 21 assists, 10 digs and two service aces.
Carson Williams led the team with 16 digs, three assists and a service ace.
Maddie Irvin collected 12 digs, two service aces and an assist.
Connor Davis had 10 digs, two service aces, one kill and an assist.
In their first match against Averett (25-9, 17-2 USAS), the Pacers fell in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-15. The Cougars clinched the North Division's no. one seed with another win later in the day against North Carolina Wesleyan.
Bland notched seven kills, while Frazier chipped in with six kills and a pair of block assists. Solomon registered 18 assists, seven digs, three kills and a service ace. Williams led the team with 13 digs.
WPU will have another crack at the Cougars in the opening round of the conference tournament. The Pacers open the tournament against Averett this Friday, November 6 at 3:00 p.m.
