Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Covenant

CARY, NC – The William Peace University men's soccer team was back in action Saturday afternoon, hosting the Scots of Covenant College. The Pacers took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half but couldn't close it out, as the Scots came back to win in overtime, 2-1.

Enrique Ochoa put WPU (2-15, 2-7 USAS) ahead in the 26th minute with his team leading fifth goal of the season. Luis Reyes-Gomez notched his first assist of the season, playing it over the top to Ochoa in the box, who beat his defender and tucked it away.

WPU held onto the lead until Michael Arango connected with Carl Simakoff for the equalizer in the 64th minute. The Pacers came out aggressive in the overtime period with a pair of shots that narrowly missed, but Covenant (5-9-2, 4-3-2 USAS) weathered the storm and scored their next time down the field. The Scots were quick to take advantage of a foul assessed against the Pacers. Russell Harrison sent it into the box and Arango headed it in for the game winner in the 97th minute.

"I'm proud of our guys. They put in a tremendous effort today. I thought we played well enough to win, but unfortunately, it didn't shake out that way for us in the end," said head coach Caleb Husmann. "It's a tough one to swallow, but we'll reset and get ready for Wednesday."

The Pacers are currently outside looking in to the conference tournament with one more to go against Averett University this Wednesday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. A loss to the cougars ends their season, but the Pacers can claim the final spot with a win and a Ferrum loss, or a win and a Huntingdon loss. They can jump as high as the seventh seed with a win and losses from both Ferrum and Huntingdon.
