WPU Men's Soccer Puts Panthers Away, 2-1

MARTINSVILLE, VA – The William Peace University men's soccer team was back in action on Wednesday, as the Pacers traveled to face the Panthers of Ferrum College where they won, 2-1.

Dylan Shields struck first for the Pacers (2-9, 2-3 USAS) with an unassisted goal in the 39th minute, his second of the season.  Enrique Ochoa put away the eventual game winner, which also came unassisted five minutes into the second half. It was Ochoa's team leading, third goal of the season.

Ferrum (3-7, 2-3 USAS) put 12 shots on goal, while WPU only totaled seven shots for the match, but the Pacers' defense held strong led by a career high 11 saves for Tanielu Riley in goal. The Panthers finally broke through in the 88th minute to make it a 2-1 game, but it was too little, too late.

"I'm very proud of the guys…excellent win against a solid opponent," said head coach Caleb Husmann. "Everyone stepped up today, held themselves accountable and took ownership of their own performance. It was a tremendous effort and a great team performance."

Despite their 0-6 start to their season, WPU has made considerable strides since. The Pacers two conference wins puts them third in the standings. Two of their three conference losses came in 1-0 games and the other game against Maryville, who is 8-1-1 with an undefeated, 3-0-1 record in the USA South.

Assuming there are no schedule changes for inclement weather caused by Hurricane Joaquin, the WPU men's soccer team is scheduled to host Methodist University this Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
