William Peace Men's Soccer Bested by Bluefield College, 2-1

EMORY, VA. – The William Peace men's soccer team was back in action this afternoon, but after getting off to a 2-0 start, the Pacers dropped their first match of the season to the Rams of Bluefield College, 2-1.

"It was a tough match today against a very good Bluefield College squad," said head coach Zane Hill.  "The chemistry wasn't there today as it has been in the first couple of matches, but luckily, it's early in the season and we have plenty of time to continue working on our timing and runs into the attacking third."

The game remained scoreless until the 42nd minute when Bluefield capitalized on a penalty kick taken by Jacob Mader. Despite a strong effort out of WPU's backline, the Ram's had numerous opportunities taking 12 shots in the opening half.  Weary legs led to a late tackle in the box which the referee was not willing to overlook.

Bluefield's attack continued into the second half with 15 more shots, and they were able to go ahead 2-0 in the 61st minute on a goal from Erik Albarran.  WPU keeper Connor Johnston saved a Ram's shot on goal but was unable to control possession, and Albarran was able to knock it home off the rebound.

"Despite giving up two goals, Connor Johnston came up big for us tonight," said Hill.  "Him along with the backline of Luis Reyes-Gomes, Phillip Peaden, and Michael McKeel kept us in the game saving numerous close shots from being converted into goals."

WPU played tough the rest of the way but was unable to muster up any significant scoring opportunities and ended up being outshot 27-5 for the game. Johnston finished the game with eight saves.

The outcome wasn't what the Pacers were hoping for, but Coach Hill was pleased with the effort and looks forward to seeing how his team responds for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday against Emory & Henry

"At least one positive to take home from the game is we never gave up until the last whistle, we still had some fight, and really left it on the field, " said Hill.  "Games like this will make us stronger once we get into conference play, and tomorrow will be a test of our resiliency and how we're able to bounce back following a tough loss."
