William Peace Women's Soccer Handles Hollins with Ease, 9-0

CARY, N.C. – The William Peace women's soccer team had a record setting performance Saturday afternoon as they handled Hollins University with ease on their way to a 9-0 win.

The Pacers (1-1-1) set a new school record racking up 60 shots, and they came up one goal short of tying the single match record set back in 2009 against Mary Baldwin.  WPU also played a man down the entire second half and called off the dogs following Ashley Johnson's goal with just less than 15 minutes left in regulations.

The match would have been even more lopsided if it wasn't for Hollins' keeper, Megan McKee, who played a stellar match making 33 saves.

Amelia Melching and Katie Hodges led the way for WPU. Melching and Hodges both scored two goals and added two assists.  Jessica Littleton also had a career game with two goals.

Melching led things off with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute and then connected with Hodges who put it in the back of the net less than two minutes later for a quick, 2-0 lead.

Melching was credited with another assist in the 17th minute as she took the feed from Mari Mitterling out wide and crossed it into the box finding Dava McLamb who headed it in for goal number three.

Littleton joined in on the action in the 29th minute lofting a shot over the keepers head to make it 4-0, and then Whitney O'Quinn scored in the 42nd minute with some help from Hodges giving the Pacers a five goal edge at the break.

Nine minutes into the second half, Melching scored her second of the game as she maneuvered her way across the box and past a couple defenders until she found a clean look at the goal. Littleton scored her second goal of the game in the 71st, assisted by Shannon Maddex, to make it 7-0.

A couple minutes later, Hodges took a free kick from distance that she somehow managed to tuck into the corner pocket for goal number eight, and Johnson finished things off in the in the 77th minute with a long distance shot.

The William Peace women's soccer team will be back on their home pitch Friday, September 12 as they take on Warren Wilson at 7:00 p.m.
