William Peace Volleyball Falls Twice on Final Day of Sea Gull Classic

SALISBURY, MD. – The William Peace Volleyball team returned to action for two more matches on Saturday at the Sea Gull Classic. Unfortunately, the Pacers (2-6) dropped both of them in three sets, first to Salisbury, who went 4-0 hosting the weekend tournament, followed by Virginia Wesleyan.

The Pacers came out strong against Salisbury (8-0) grabbing a 17-10 lead, but the Sea Gulls stormed all the way back going on a 9-0 run to go ahead by two.  WPU fought back and went on a 4-0 spurt of their own but came up short, 25-22.

In the second, Salisbury went ahead 10-6, but another four point swing in favor of WPU tied things up at 10. It went down to the wire tied 23-23, but a Pacers service error followed by a Sea Gulls kill put WPU behind, 2-0, with the 25-23 second set loss.

Down early in the third, the Pacers battled back to take a 12-9 lead, but Salisbury went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 14-12.  WPU tied it back up at 14, but the Sea Gulls were too strong down the stretch.  They closed things out on an 11-4 run to take the third set, 25-18, and the match.

As a team, the Pacers hit .333 led by Ivey who had 10 kills to go along with a service ace, two block assists, and a block solo.  Ivey was also named to the all-tournament team.

Megan Mansfield had 8 kills and four block assists while Tempestt Frazier chipped in six kills and two block assists. Baylee Maughon collected 25 assists.

In their final match of the weekend, WPU played Virginia Wesleyan (7-3) and lost a tight first set, 25-22. They withered down the stretch though falling in sets two and three, 25-19 and 25-12.

Mansfield led the team with seven kills at a .333 clip.  Laura Bland also notched seven kills, and Frazier added six more. Carson Williams led the defense with 17 digs. Maddie Irvin totaled 13 digs to go along with a service ace.

The William Peace volleyball team will return to action on Wednesday, Sep. 10 at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to take on Randolph College.
