DANVILLE, VA. – After earning a split with a win against Guilford in day one of Averett's Cougar Classic yesterday, the William Peace volleyball team returned to action on Sunday for two more matches against Central Iowa and Hollins University.
WPU looked destined to finish the day with another split after they fell to Central Iowa in three sets and jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Hollins, but the Pacers dropped the next three sets to finish their opening weekend with a record of 1-3.
The Pacers lost 25-22, 25-17, and 25-19 against Central. Megan Mansfield led the Pacers with eight kills while Merica Ivey had seven, Tempestt Frazier had six, and Nicole Phillips added five. Manfield also had two block solos and a block assist while, Maddie Irvin tallied 13 digs and Carson William added 12 more to help pace WPU defensively.
In their second match of the day against Hollins, the Pacers won the first two sets rather convincingly including a 25-11 win in set two after a 25-18 first set victory. Hollins took set three, 25-19, and barely squeaked past the Pacers in the fourth and fifth sets, 26-24 and 20-18.
Offensively for the Pacers, Laura Bland led the way recording a career high 21 kills at a clip of .390 to go along with 2 block solos. Merica Ivey totaled 15 kills at a clip of .423, while Carson William led the team with 20 digs.
Maughon racked up 54 assists, matching the second highest mark for a match in WPU volleyball history.
