WPU Women's Soccer Scores Two Goals Late Topping Mary Baldwin, 3-1

STAUNTON, VA – It took two goals in the final two minutes, but the William Peace women's soccer team escaped with a win over Mary Baldwin this afternoon, 3-1.

The Pacers (4-12-1, 2-8 USAS) took a 1-0 lead before the half thanks to a goal from Mari Mitterling in the 42nd minute assisted by Katie Hodges, but Mary Baldwin (2-13-0, 0-11 USAS) found a way to tie things up in the 78th behind a Mayzie Lewis score.

Hodges netted what would prove to be the game winner though in the 89th, her fourth of the year.  Amelia Melching scored her fourth goal of the year with 10 seconds left making it 3-1.

"Luckily, we finally decided to turn it on in the final five minutes working the ball a little deeper and getting some good shots," said head coach Keith Jenkins. "We feel good about the win but still have a couple tough ones ahead of us."

WPU took 18 shots with 13 on target during the match. They also had a sizeable corner kick advantage, 11-2. The Pacer's defense struggled at times without senior Devin Thompson surrendering 16 shots, but Shannon Maddex made seven saves, and fortunately their one mishap in the 78th didn't come back to haunt them.

The William Peace women's soccer team will turn around for another match tomorrow against the Scots of Covenant College at 4:30 p.m. The Pacers close out the regular season on the road next week at Averett.
