WPU Volleyball Edges Ferrum in Five, Falls to Averett in Four

DANVILLE, VA – The William Peace volleyball team traveled to Danville, Virginia this afternoon for a pair of USA South matches against Ferrum College and Averett University.  The Pacers held off Ferrum for a 3-2 win but fell to Averett in four.

WPU (12-19, 9-7 USAS) looked sluggish in their opening set of the day against Ferrum.  They trailed by as many as nine and eventually lost, 25-21. The Pacers used a 9-0 run and hit .387 to bounce back for an easy, 25-16, win in the second though and kept the momentum going into the third which they took, 25-21.

It was a tale of two different squads at times for WPU as they allowed Ferrum (5-20, 4-14 USAS) to even things up in the fourth, 25-21.  The Pacers committed 17 combined attack errors in the first and fourth sets while committing only nine in the second and third.

Fortunately, WPU was able to turn it on when it mattered most.  They didn't commit a single attack error as they hit at an impressive .714 clip in the fifth to close things out, 15-7.

Megan Mansfield recorded 18 kills for the second match in a row pacing the WPU attack. Mansfield also had five digs and a career performance at the nets with eight block assists and a block solo.

Laura Bland had 16 kills with eight digs and three block assists.  Baylee Maughon tallied 47 assists and 5 digs. Carson Williams led the Pacer's back line racking up a career high 27 digs.

WPU didn't fare as well in their second match of the day against Averett (20-12, 14-4 USAS). After dropping the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-15, the Pacers did manage to extend the match winning the third, 25-22.  However, the Cougars were too much and finished the Peace off in the fourth, 25-15.

Bland notched a team high 13 kills to go along with 11 digs and two block assists.  Mansfield had 12 kills and five blocks assists.  Williams led the team with 18 digs, while Maddie Irvin each contributed 10 digs apiece. Lorena Fernandez had a team best 22 assists and Maughon had 17 assists.

The Pacers play one more regular season match next Wedesday, Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to take on the Avenging Angels of Meredith College.
