RALEIGH, NC – In her final match under the roof of the Hermann Athletic Center, senior Megan Mansfield had a career night leading the William Peace volleyball team to a critical conference win over Methodist University, 3-0.
Mansfield racked up 18 kills, six service aces, six digs, and four block assists in what was arguably her most impressive performance as a member of the Pacers. She totaled a career high 26 points, nearly half of WPU's 56 total points, in addition to reaching new career marks in kills and service aces per set.
Tempestt Frazier also reached double-digit kills for the Pacers with 11 hitting at a .526 clip. Defensively, Frazier had four block assists and a block solo. Carson Williams led the team with 19 digs while Connor Davis added 11 more. Baylee Maughon notched 38 assists and nine digs.
"It was a huge, huge win for us…definitely one of those wins that could potentially turn the tide for the rest of the season," said head coach Kevin Daniels. "It's what we've been looking for out of these girls all year, and now it's a matter of replicating tonight's performance over our final few matches."
In a tight first set, WPU (11-18, 8-6 USAS) held on for the win, 25-22. Methodist (13-14, 8-6 USAS) made it 22-21 after trailing the Pacers by five, but Mansfield and Meghan Luffman teamed up for a pair of block assists to finish the Monarchs off.
Luffman also played her final home match as a Pacer. Her time on the court has been limited due to an injury plagued career, but the senior captain will still graduate as one of the top blockers in the program's history. She made her first start of the season playing only the first set, but it couldn't have ended in a more appropriate fashion.
Trailing early in the second and with Mansfield at the service line, the Pacers used a 7-0 swing to gain control of the set which they won, 25-17. Mansfield had three service aces and two kills during the stretch. Methodist trailed WPU, 15-10, in the third before going on a 7-1 run to jump ahead by one. The Pacers immediately responded with a 6-1 spurt of their own though taking the set, 25-22.
The William Peace volleyball team returns to action this Friday, Oct. 24 with a pair of matches in Danville, Virginia. The Pacers will face Ferrum at 3:00 p.m. followed by Averett at 7:00 p.m.
