Men’s Soccer Comes Up Short at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The William Peace University men's soccer team dropped its first match of the season Friday night, falling 2-0 to Hampden-Sydney on the road.

Hampden-Sydney got on the board in the ninth minute as Zakky Johnston scored off an assist from Colin Mason to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.

The Pacers created several chances in the opening half, including five corner kicks and six shots. Tambe Mboumein, Zach Marlier and Santiago Escobar each put a shot on goal, but Hampden-Sydney goalkeeper Stig Larson kept Peace off the board.

Freshman goalkeeper Dallas Story kept the Pacers within one with several stops before Hampden-Sydney added its second goal in the 39th minute. Story saved a penalty kick from Tyler Petz, but Gavin Edgington scored on the ensuing play to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Neither side found the back of the net in the second half. Story finished with eight saves in goal.

Peace finished with eight shots, three on goal and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Hampden-Sydney recorded 16 shots with 10 on goal.

The Pacers move to 1-1 on the season and return to action Tuesday, Sept. 8, when they travel to Charlotte to take on Queens University of Charlotte at 6 p.m. at Queens Sports Complex.
