Men's Soccer Battles Pfeiffer to 1-1 Draw

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Just three days after running away with the year's first conference play win, the Pacers hit the road to face the Falcons of Pfeiffer University.

Coming into Wednesday night, the Pacers and Falcons were tied atop the standings in the USA South. The Falcons led the league in shots on goal per game, while Peace led in overall shots taken, something had to give.

Both offenses got out to a quick start as the Falcons got a shot off in the first minute, and the Pacers got a shot on frame in the 6th. Neither chance amounted to a goal, and both teams continued to fight for an early foothold.

The possession flip-flopped for the next 25-plus minutes. Peace got two more shots off in the 26th and 28th minutes, but both missed the frame.

Pfeiffer made a push around the 35 minute mark, launching a counter attack off of a wasted Peace corner kick. After winning a free kick, the Falcons executed on a set piece in the 36th minute that put the home team ahead 1-0.

The 1-0 score would hold until the break, and the stat sheet after the first half looked confusing. Peace led in shots (6-4) and corner kicks (4-1), but the Falcons led in the most important stat column as the scoreboard had the Falcons up one.

The Pacers got the first shot of the second half, but it was blocked before it could come near the frame. Peace continued to hold a slight edge on possession time as their chances seemed to come more frequently than those for the Falcons.

A stalemate of throw ins and no real advancement made up the next 20 minutes of game play.

Pfeiffer did take one of those throw-ins towards goal and put a shot on frame in the 64th minute, but Ayden Miller was up to the task, keeping the Pacers in it.

The significance of that save grew quickly as Roberto Rayo finished a ball from Ausar Omwenga in the 65th, equalizing the match.

Pfeiffer looked for a push to take the lead back, but Ayden Miller came up with another key save in the 75th minute, maintaining the tie.

Both teams make a couple substitutions at the 80th minute mark, looking for an unsung hero to put their team ahead late.

Pfeiffer had a good look in the 85th minute, but the rocket from Falcon Sophomore Welsey Hooker's foot sailed harmlessly over the bar.

That bullet dodged was the last chance for either team as the match came to a close knotted in a 1-1 draw.

It is the second draw in 3 conference matches for Peace, creating a 3-way tie for first place in the USA South standings. Peace, Pfeiffer, and Methodist all sport 1-0-2 records in conference play.

The Pacers will come back home for a Saturday matinee against the team in outright second, Brevard.
