Women's Soccer Routs Regent 5-1

CARY, N.C. – William Peace played its most satisfying game of the women's soccer season so far, trouncing Regent 5-1 at WakeMed Soccer Park Wednesday.

The Pacers (2-1-1 overall) outshot the Royals 18-6 and controlled possession 65 percent of the time. The five goals are the most the Pacers have scored in nine games going back to last season. The winning margin is the largest this season.

"It was a great team effort tonight and a great team win to get us back on track," said Head Coach Becky Scroger about the Pacers' first win since the season opener. "Everybody contributed and we had multiple goal scorers which was really nice to see. I am really proud of the overall effort today and how we responded."

Emma Avery and Cate Czyzewski scored two goals each to pace William Peace and Avery added an assist. Savanna Berckmiller also scored, and goalkeepers Mackenzie Kirk and Gaby Vazquez combined to hold Regent to one goal.

Avery and Berckmiller each scored early in the first half for a 2-0 Pacers lead. Regent (1-2-0) cut the margin to 2-1 in the second half on a penalty kick goal.

Despite outplaying Regent, William Peace held a one-goal lead until late in the contest. The Pacers exploded for three goals in the final 14 minutes to put the Royals away.

Czyzewski scored on Emma Mayer's assist for a 3-1 lead around the 76-minute mark. Eight minutes later, Avery scored on a spectacular free kick well outside the penalty box to extend the lead to three.

Czyzewski finished off Regent with her second goal of the half. She scored with two seconds left for the final score.

The Pacers are 2-0-1 against Regent in their last three games. They have outscored the Royals a combined 17-3 in the series.

After completing a four-game homestand, the Pacers hit the road for the first time next Tuesday (Sept. 17). William Peace visits Averett in Danville, Va., at 7 p.m. before starting its USA South Conference schedule next Saturday (Sept. 21).
