Pacers Top Mary Baldwin In 10th, Fall To Pfeiffer In USA South Bracket Finals

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – No. 8 seed William Peace amassed a season-high 24 hits to beat No. 4 seed Mary Baldwin 13-8 in 10 innings in a USA South Tournament elimination softball game at Jack Ingram Field on Friday.

The Pacers' season ended in the next game. They lost 8-0 in five innings to top seed Pfeiffer in the tournament's Bracket 1 finals. The Bracket 1 and Bracket 2 winners will play a best-of-three championship series next weekend for the conference crown.

The loss marked the final game for WPU Head Coach Charlie Dobbins, who spent 25 years at the helm. The Pacers finished the season 22-22 overall.

The top eight teams qualified for the USA South Tournament, which is split into two four-team, double-elimination brackets. The Pacers were in Bracket 1 with host Pfeiffer, Mary Baldwin and No. 5 seed Southern Virginia.

The Pacers advanced to the Bracket 1 finals and were one of four teams remaining overall despite being the tournament's lowest seed. They opened with two games on Thursday, a loss to Pfeiffer in the first round and a win over Southern Virginia in an elimination game.

The Pacers tallied a then-season high 20 hits in the 12-5 victory over Southern Virginia. They surpassed that total against Mary Baldwin.

Most of the hits were by No. 2 batter Adanya Day, No. 3 batter Reagan Stewart and No. 5 batter Preston Hawkins. They combined for 15 hits, five RBIs and four runs. Lydia Hunt led the Pacers with three RBIs and added two runs scored and Cierra Lear had two RBIs and two runs scored.

Day's two-run single stretched the Pacers' lead to 7-0 in the fifth inning. The Pacers were ahead 8-2 in the sixth inning but Mary Baldwin rallied to tie the game. The Squirrels scored five runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Neither team scored until the 10th inning. Stewart capped a five-run surge with a two-run single.

Haley Joyce retired the side in the bottom half of the 10th for the pitching win. She allowed four hits with one strikeout, no walks and one earned run in 4.2 innings.
