Ponce Wins Deciding Match in 5-4 Men's Tennis Win Over Ferrum

RALEIGH, N.C. – Ivan Ponce clinched victory for William Peace in men's tennis by winning the deciding match at Lions Park on Saturday.

With fans and players from both teams watching with anticipation, Ponce won a three-set thriller in No. 5 singles as the Pacers edged Ferrum 5-4 in a non-conference match. Ponce defeated his opponent 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 to give the Pacers their second win of the season.

The drama increased with each point in the last match of the day. After losing a close second set, Ponce dominated the third set to the delight of his teammates, fans and the Pacers women's team who had completed its match earlier.

The score was tied 4-4 between the Pacers and Ferrum, setting the stage for the ending in No. 5 singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Sam Jones and Ben Fleming set the tone with an 8-4 victory.

The Pacers then dominated singles play, winning three of five matches leading up to Ponce's match. Patrick Buckler won 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles and Angel Araiza won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.

Sam Jones captured No. 1 singles 7-5, 4-3 when his opponent retired due to injury in the second set. His victory tied the score and set up the final match featuring Ponce.
