Strong Pitching Leads Pacers To Softball Sweep Over Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. – Kimberly Bordeaux and Rachel Mori both fired three-hitters as William Peace defeated Shaw 14-1 in the first game and 8-1 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at the WPU Softball Complex on Thursday.

Bordeaux recorded five strikeouts and one walk in five innings in the first game to improve to 6-1 as a pitcher. Mori posted six strikeouts and three walks in six innings in the second game to up her pitching record to 5-2. Haley Joyce pitched the last inning of the second game, allowing one hit and no runs.

"Kim Bordeaux and Rachel Mori both did great jobs, holding Shaw to two runs on the day," Pacers Head Coach Charlie Dobbins said. "I think both wins will help instill some confidence in our squad as we head towards the final two weekends of conference play and the USA South Tournament."

The Pacers totaled 24 hits combined in both wins. Adanya Day drove in four runs, Preston Hawkins had three RBIs and Samantha McGhee knocked in two runs. Angelina Jones scored four runs, Lydia Hunt scored three runs and four Pacers – Reanna Braswell, Day, Reagan Stewart and Marissa Fuller – scored two runs each.

In the first game, Shaw took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Pacers responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning. Megan McAnany highlighted the inning with an RBI triple and Taryn Shelton added an RBI single.

Hawkins belted a two-run double and Stewart hit an RBI single in the third inning to expand the lead to 11-1. Megan Hobbs connected on an RBI single and McGhee hit a two-run single in the fourth inning for the final score.

In the second game, Jones scored on a wild pitch and Day hit an RBI single for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Shaw cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning, but the Pacers answered with three runs – including a Hunt RBI double - in the bottom half for a 5-1 lead.

Braswell's solo homer sparked a three-run fifth inning. Erin Miles added an RBI single and Day recorded an RBI double in the inning.

The Pacers return to conference play on Saturday against Salem in a road doubleheader. The first game starts at 1 p.m. followed by the second game at 3 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
