Volleyball Falls Twice In Tri-Match

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – William Peace had a tough day in women's volleyball on Saturday.

The Pacers started the morning falling to Salem 3-1 (27-29, 25-23, 21-25, 12-25) in a USA South matchup. In the next match, William Peace dropped a non-conference five-setter 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 25-17, 25-22, 15-12) to Carolina University.

The Pacers left the tri-match 4-2 in the USA South and 11-7 overall. Salem, which was the host, is now 5-2 in the USA South and 13-4 overall. CarolinaU is 8-5 overall.

Sarah Yates led the Pacers with 16 kills against Salem. Jordan Juanes and Chassie Jacops added 12 kills and 10 kills, respectively.

Maegan Brylski finished with 35 assists and 15 digs. Vivian Camplin had 15 digs and five aces.

Each set was close against Salem except for the fourth set. The Pacers trailed 20-14 in the first set but came back to take a 24-23 lead. Salem outlasted the Pacers down the stretch 29-27.

In a tight second set, the score was tied 23-23 but kills by Jacobs and Georgia Grace Anderson from Brylski gave the Pacers a 25-23 win to even the match at 1-1.

The third set also went down to the wire. The score was tied 19-19 but the Pacers were outscored 6-2 for a 25-21 loss. The Spirits controlled the fourth set for the match victory.

Against CarolinaU, Yates tallied eight kills and Madeline Simpson finished with seven kills to lead a balanced attack. The trio of Tameka Adams, Ashley Wyrick and Juanes each had six kills.

AJ Townsend finished with 19 assists and Arens added 13 assists. Townsend led the Pacers with four aces and Savannah Hairr compiled 12 digs.

In the first set, William Peace extended a 7-6 lead to 14-7 which keyed its 25-20 win. They opened a 16-11 lead in the second set which led to a 25-18 win.

Down 2-0, CarolinaU rallied to take the five-set win. The Bruins jumped out to a 5-0 third-set lead which expanded to 14-5. The Pacers got as close as 20-14 before falling 25-17.

The Bruins shot out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set but the Pacers came back to tie the score 8-8. The score was tied 18-18 but the Bruins went on a 7-4 run to win set four 25-22 and tie the match 2-2.

A 7-0 spurt gave the Bruins the lead and momentum at 12-3. The Pacers nearly made up the deficit, closing within 13-12 before the Bruins scored the last two points for the match win.

The Pacers are back in action against Meredith on their rival's home floor Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. This is the second meeting between both teams this season.
