Women's Soccer Scores First But Falls To Unbeaten Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – William Peace entered Thursday's women's soccer contest against unbeaten Brevard on a two-game win streak.

There was hope the streak would stretch to three after the Pacers scored first against the USA South Conference leader. But Brevard scored three unanswered goals to hand the Pacers a 3-1 defeat at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Despite the loss, the Pacers (3-4 USA South, 5-5-2 overall) are still in position to reach the USA South Tournament. Currently seventh in the standings with two regular-season games left, the Pacers are in solid position to grab a postseason bid. The top eight teams will qualify for the league tourney, which starts Nov. 2.

The Pacers are peaking near the end of the regular season, which Brevard (6-0-1 USA South, 12-0-2 overall) discovered early on. William Peace stunned the Tornados with a goal off a corner kick in the opening minutes.

Emma Mayer, the team's assist leader, kicked the ball to Mia Rumachik, who put the ball in the net from close range for her third goal this season. With nine minutes elapsed, the Pacers led 1-0. The assist was Mayer's fourth this season.

Brevard quickly regrouped and scored nearly six minutes later to tie the game. The Tornados added another goal in the first half for a 2-1 halftime lead. In the second half, Brevard tacked on a goal for the 3-1 final score.

Pacers' goalkeeper Gaby Vazquez hung tough as the Tornadoes fired 22 shots including 10 on goal. Though giving up three goals, she finished with seven saves.

William Peace looks to bounce back and finish strong the final two regular-season games, including Saturday's home encounter against Methodist on Senior Day. First kick is 2 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
