Women's Soccer Defeats Salem 1-0

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace scored on a corner kick in the second half to beat Salem 1-0 in a USA South women's soccer match on Saturday.

The Pacers upped their record to 2-3 in the conference and 4-4-2 overall while Salem dropped to 0-7 and 4-9. Currently seventh in the standings, William Peace would qualify for the USA Conference Tournament if the regular season ended today. The top eight teams in the regular season will advance to the tourney, which starts Nov. 2.

William Peace scored the game's only goal in the first seven minutes of the second half. Emma Mayer booted a pass from the right corner to Emma Avery, who kicked the ball past the goalie into the net on a perfectly executed play. Avery scored her sixth goal and Mayer collected her third assist this season.

The score held up the rest of the game as the Pacers, led by goalie Gaby Vazquez, shut out the Spirits. The Pacers outshot their opponent 19-11, including a 12-8 edge in the second half.

The next game for William Peace is Tuesday, Oct. 22, against Pfeiffer at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
