Women's Soccer Battles Back To Tie JWU Charlotte 1-1

CARY, N.C. – William Peace rallied late in the second half to tie Johnson & Wales Charlotte 1-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game at WakeMed Soccer Park Tuesday night.

Emma Avery scored after a throw-in at approximately the 76-minute mark to pull the Pacers (2-2-2 overall) even with the Wildcats. The goal was her team-leading fifth this season.

The Pacers, who fell behind early, were more aggressive in the second half. Five of their seven shots were in the final 45 minutes.

"We showed a lot of grit battling back after not a great performance in the first half," Head Coach Becky Scroger said. "We were able to create a lot more quality chances and have more of an attacking presence in the second half, even though we weren't able to put it away. We'll look to build on that second-half performance and carry that momentum forward with us into conference play this weekend."

Led by Avery, Savanna Berckmiller, Mia Rumachik, Lyndsey Knox and Dayna Kenworthy, the Pacers attacked the Wildcats' goal relentlessly, culminating in Avery's score.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Gaby Vazquez kept the game close with her defense. She recorded a season-high eight saves, including several spectacular diving stops against the Wildcats, who have beaten two USA South teams this season.

The Wildcats (2-3-1 overall) struck early, scoring less than two minutes into the contest. They finished with thirteen shots but Vazquez snuffed out several breakaway attempts. Thanks to Vazquez, the Pacers stayed within striking distance until Avery's goal.

The Pacers are home again Saturday, Oct. 5, against defending USA South champion Southern Virginia. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park.
