Men's Soccer Hosts N.C. Wesleyan In Conference Opener Wednesday

RALEIGH, N.C. – After a nine-day break, William Peace is back on the field Wednesday for its USA South Conference men's soccer opener.

The Pacers will host conference favorite N.C. Wesleyan at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Game time is 7 p.m. and admission is free.

The contest shapes up as an early season test for both teams. N.C. Wesleyan was picked first and William Peace second in the 2024 USA South Coaches Preseason Poll.

The Battling Bishops (3-2-4 overall) played their conference opener Saturday, a 1-0 win at Pfeiffer. Meanwhile, the Pacers (3-3-2 overall) were off last week after beating non-conference foe Piedmont 3-0 on Sept. 22. The win was their second straight in two days.

Career goals leader Jorge Lemus is the Pacers' offensive sparkplug. Lemus leads the team in goals (3), assists (2) and points (8).

Lemus ranks 10^th in the conference in goals average per game and Zach Marlier is tied for third in game-winning goals average. Daniel Romanchok is atop the conference in shot accuracy.

Defensively, freshman goalkeeper Rafa Quevodo-Antunez leads the USA South in shutouts (4) and shutouts per game. He is tied for 26^th in shutouts among NCAA Division III goalkeepers.

The series has swung back and forth the past five contests. William Peace owned a two-game win streak between the 2020 and 2021 seasons, but N.C. Wesleyan has won the last three contests.
