Softball Splits Conference Opener With Cougars

DANVILLE, VA -- William Peace University softball split a doubleheader in their USA South conference opener with Averett University. The Cougars would rally late in game one to defeat the Pacers 3-2, but the Pacers would respond with their own late rally in game two to take a 3-2 win over the Cougars.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One

The Pacers would get on the board first at the top of 3rd as a triple from Lauren Conway would bring home Dara Orr to give WPU a 1-0 lead. A single from Candice Smith would bring home Conway and put the Pacers up 2-0. The Cougars would respond in the bottom of the 4th as a homerun from Hannah Thompson would cut the Pacer lead to 2-1.

Thompson would double in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 2-2 late as the Cougars rallied. A double from Chloe Moore would bring in the final run and give the Cougars a late 3-2 win over the Pacers.

Game Two

The Cougars would get out to an early 2-0 lead in game two, with a double from A. Rodriguez bringing in a run and Rodriguez later scoring on a wild pitch. The Pacers would battle to respond at the top of the 5th as Lauren Conway would drive in Nadia Pittman for a score of 2-1. At the top of the 7th, the Pacers would complete their rally as a single from Candice Smith would tie the game 2-2, before a single from Megan McAnany would give them a 3-2 lead. They would keep the Cougars at bay in the bottom of the inning to win 3-2 and split the day.

  • Hannah Thompson went 2 for 2 in game one with one homerun and 2 RBIs.
