Pacers Battle In Four Set Loss To Washington And Lee

RALEIGH, NC -- William Peace University volleyball fell 3-1 in their season opener against defending ODAC champions, Washington & Lee. The Pacers would fall in the first two sets before battling back against a tough opponent to close the gap to 2-1, but the Generals would take over in the final set to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set One (17-25)

The Generals would gain early momentum as a few early kills by Sydney Heifner would put them up 3-0. Kills by Hannah Collier and Georgia Grace Anderson would put the Pacers within one as they trailed 6-5. Heifner would continue to be strong for the Generals, putting up two more kills to give them an 11-7 lead. They would tally four in a row to lead 19-12 to control the rest of the set and win 25-17.

Set Two (21-25)

Set two would prove to be a back-and-forth contest, with the Generals taking an early 4-1 lead. The Pacers would gain huge momentum as they notched an outstanding 12 in a row on kills from Alyssa Poteat and Shelby Cooper. However, the Generals would battle back with 9 consecutive points to tie the set 13-13. The remainder of the set would be close, with Washington and Lee edging out the Pacers to win 25-21 and lead the game 2-0.

Set Three (25-20)

The third set would again start off in favor of the Generals as they took an early 5-2 lead. The Pacers would tie the set at 16-16 before a service ace by Shelby Cooper would give them a 17-16 lead. A few kills by Hannah Collier would put them up 21-17, while a final kill by Shelby Cooper would win the set for WPU and cut down the Generals' lead on the game to 2-1.

Set Four (25-11)

The start of set four would be close, with a kill by Hannah Collier tying it up 6-6. Washington & Lee would tally seven consecutive points to lead 13-6, with a kill by Avery Myers giving them an 18-10 edge. They would collect the final points of the set to win 25-11 and secure the 3-1 victory.
