Phillips And Gupton Lead Pacers Over Wildcats

CHARLOTTE, NC -- William Peace University men's basketball picked up their first win of the early season with an 89-79 victory over Johnson and Wales University. Garrett Phillips led the team with 25 points, while Smith Gupton added 24. The Pacers now look towards their home opener this Saturday against Virginia Wesleyan University at 3PM.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first half, the Pacers would get out to an early 6-5 lead with two shots from behind the arc coming from Beau Bryant. Garrett Phillips would add two consecutive 3-pointers to bring the score to 12-5, while three's from Smith Gupton and Tyler Parton, and a dunk from Michael Dulin, would increase the lead to 20-11. Phillips would continue to be sharp from behind the arc, while a few free throws from Donolly Tyrell Jr. would bring the score to 33-22. The Wildcats would battle back within one to trail 35-34, but Garrett Phillips and Smith Gupton would combine from behind the arc to send the Pacers into halftime leading 44-34.
  • Donolly Tyrell Jr. would start off the second half with a big dunk for the Pacers to lead 46-34. A layup from Tyrell Jr. and a shot from behind the arc from Rashod Rouse would give the Pacers a 58-44 advantage. A few shots from the foul line and another 3-pointer from Smith Gupton would bring the score to 71-57. The Wildcats would battle back within 7, but a layup from Donolly Tyrell Jr. would put the Pacers ahead 79-70. Garrett Phillips and Smith Gupton would pick up the final shots from the foul line for the Pacers to give them an 89-79 win over the Wildcats.
PACER TOP PERFORMERS
  • Garrett Phillips led the team with 25 points, going 5-9 from behind the arc and 6-7 from the foul line. 
  • Smith Gupton added 24 points as he went 7-12 from the field and 5-5 from the foul line
  • Donolly Tyrell Jr. and Beau Bryant each tallied a double-double, with Tyrell Jr. picking up 10 points and 11 rebounds and Bryant adding 12 points and 10 rebounds.
FOR THE FOES
  • Anthoney Ray led the Wildcats with 28 points as he went 10-20 from the field. 
  • Fred Pattereson notched 18 points and 8 rebounds.
STATS OF THE GAME
  • The Pacers went 41.8% from the field and 85.7% from the foul line, also tallying 33 rebounds.

The Pacers will return to the Hermann Athletic Center for their home opener on Saturday, November 20th at 3PM against Virginia Wesleyan University.
