Pacers Conclude Grandslam Triangle Classic

The William Peace University softball team went (0-2) on the day as they fell to Kean University (5-2) and Randolph-Macon College (9-1). The Pacers played well throughout the weekend as they faced several tough opponents, including nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon College (#12).

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
The Pacers would grab an early (1-0) lead at the top of the first as Candice Smith's double would score Emily Puckett. Pitcher Kylie Martinez would hold the Cougars in the bottom of the inning, with Puckett grabbing the final out to close down the inning. The game would prove to be a pitching duel as neither team would score again until the top of the sixth, as Lauren Conway's ground out would bring home Emily Puckett to give WPU a (2-0) lead. The Cougars would respond in the bottom of the sixth, scoring 5 runs, including a 3 RBI home run, to lead (5-2). The Pacers were unable to respond at the top of the seventh and would fall (5-2).

GAME TWO
Neither team could get the bats going in the first inning, with pitchers Danielle Hunt and R. Baughan holding down the defense. The Yellow Jackets would start off the scoring at the top of the second to lead (1-0). The Pacers would tie it up (1-1) in the bottom of the second as a triple by Erica James would score Natalie Manning. The Yellow Jackets would have a big third inning as they scored three runs, including 2 on a home run by E. Doyle, to lead (4-1). They would add another run at the top of the 4th (5-1) and 4  runs at the top of the 5th (9-1). The Pacers were unable to respond and would fall (9-1)

PACER TOP PERFORMERS
  • Kylie Martinez was in the circle for the Pacers for 5.1 innings as she tallied 6 strikeouts in game one.
  • Candice Smith and Lauren Conway each contributed 1 RBI in game one. 
  • Danielle Hunt pitched 3 innings for the Pacers in game two as she notched 4 strikeouts.
FOR THE FOES
  • G. Fredette went 2 for 2 while contributing 1 RBI in game one.
  • H. Sweeney was 1 for 1 in game one as she contributed 3 RBIs with her homerun.
  • R. Baughan pitched 5 innings in game two for the Yellow Jackets, tallying 2 strikeouts.
  • S. Hill was 4 for 4 at the plate while recording 2 RBIs in game two.
NEXT GAME
The Pacers will travel to Myrtle Beach, NC for the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic from March 4th-5th. Game one against Muhlenburg College is scheduled for 11:30 AM.
