Men's Basketball Falls In Thriller Against Averett


The Pacers lost a hard fought game against Averett University in a USA South Conference matchup rematch. Although the Pacers started slow (2-13), they stormed back and led (40-34) at half. The second half was back-and-forth with each team trading the lead multiple times. Despite Trey Bryant's impressive double-double (22 points, 10 rebounds), the Pacers lost on a last-second shot, making it their second loss to Averett this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pacers had a rough start, trailing (13-2) to the Averett Cougars, as the opposition went on a (13-0) run after John Burwell's field goal to start the game. Trey Bryant broke the drought with 12:30 left in the first half, with two field goals and a freethrow (5 pts.), cutting the Cougar's lead to 7. John Burwell added to his point total with another field goal, followed by a Bryant 3 to cut the to 3 (12-15). A couple of 3's from Tyson Sellers helped the Pacers storm back and get into the lead (18-17).
  • Beau Bryant got on the score sheet, extending the lead to (20-17), followed by a free throw by Trey Bryant to make it (21-17). John Burwell made a nice three with just over 7 minutes remaining in the first to extend the lead to (24-17). The Cougars soon broke their scoreless streak with a couple hoops making the game (24-21), Pacers still in the lead. Cameron Ferguson and Beau Bryant both hit three's, extending the Pacer's lead to (30-23) with just under 5 minutes left in the first. Tyson Seller's made a nice run to the bucket, laying it in for two (32-23).Trey Bryant added to his tally with two good looking free throws (34-25). A pair of Trey Bryant layups extended the lead to 10 (38-28). Tyson Sellers exploded to the basket, laying a shot in (40-32). The score was (40-32) at half.
  • The Cougars cut the lead to (42-41) early in the 2nd half. John Burwell put in a wild shot in the lane (44-41), but Averett claimed the lead once again (45-44). Camden Ferguson hit a shot from behind the arc. to steal the lead back (47-45). A Trey Bryant three put the Pacers up (50-47), but Averett soon got the lead back (50-53). John Burwell made another impressive field goal (52-53), while Trey Bryant would sink a couple free throws in the back-and-forth game to take back the lead (54-53).
  • Camden Ferguson made a couple clutch free throws to go up (56-55). John Burwell made a 1 v. 1 layup as the Pacers led by three (58-55). Camden Ferguson hit a deep three to extend the lead (61-57). Averett tied the game 61 apiece with 4:36 left in the game. Beau Bryant knocked down a couple free throws (63-61), while John Burwell scored a reverse layup (65-61). Trey Bryant scored a layup with four defenders around him to tie the game with less than 20 seconds remaining (67-67). Averett would tally the final basket with under a second left to win (69-67).
PACER TOP PERFORMERS
  • Trey Bryant led the Pacer offense with a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 70% from the field.
  • John Burwell impressed with 15 points and 8 assists.
  • Tyson Sellers contributed 12 points and 2 rebounds.

  • Raymond Bullock III led Averett with 15 points and 5 rebounds.
  • Vince Contreras posted 14 points.
