Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Pacers defeat Mary Baldwin for first conference win

Raleigh, NC -- The William Peace University women's soccer team defeated Mary Baldwin University 6-2 on September 28th, 2019 in a USA South Conference matchup. The Pacers now improve to a 4-4-1 overall record and are 1-0 in the conference.

The Pacers came out strong in the first half, controlling a majority of the possession. Rachel Alford got the game started with the first shot on goal within the first minute and thirty seconds. The first goal of the game came shortly after at the 11:23 minute mark off of a corner taken by Raine Greene. The goal was punched in by Mary Baldwin's keeper Anyka Wilkin to give WPU a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later, another corner was taken by the Pacers and was deflected in by Lillian Bates to make the game 2-0. At 36:42, Mary Baldwin's Makayla Taylor responded with a long range goal to bring the game to 2-1. The game would remain at 2-1 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Pacers came out strong with freshmen Raine Greene finding the back of the net with a nice shot to the left, which put the score at 3-1 for the Pacers. The Pacers kept consistent attacking pressure on Mary Baldwin with multiple shots on goal. The Fighting Squirrels Albani Smithers fought back, scoring a goal off a corner kick with 14:29 remaining in the game to cut the Pacer lead to 3-2. That goal would be answered by the Pacers' Victoria Finklea who brought the score to 4-2 with less than 12 minutes left.  The Lady Pacers wouldn't let up on the attack as Rachel Alford capitalized on a break away opportunity for a 5-2 lead. To close out the game Victoria Finklea scored the Pacers 6th goal of the game. The game would end with a Pacer 6-2 victory!
