Pacers Sweep Cougars in Conference Opener

The Basics:
  • Game 1: William Peace 6  Averett 5
  • Game 2: William Peace 5 Averett 2
  • Records: William Peace 7-9  Averett 17-8
  • Location: Raleigh, NC | WPU Softball Complex

Game 1:
  • The Pacers opened the game on top, as Kaylea Eubanks worked the count for a walk with bases loaded, scoring one in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Back-to-back errors in the field for the Pacers lead to two unearned runs for the Cougars to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.
  • With two on and the bats firing, Averett would hit an infield single, scoring one.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kristen Bailly hit one deep over the centerfield wall for a solo homerun. Lauren Conway would follow Bailly's homer, reaching on an error by first base. Conway stole second and advanced to third on the throw down from the catcher. Olivia Oates would bring her home with a ground out to short stop. The Pacers tied it up, 3-3.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, the Cougars strong base-hitting would give them a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Pacers would answer in the bottom of the sixth with a rally beginning with a single to left field by Kristina Mojica. Nadia Pittman would pinch run for Mojica. Kelsey Durham stepped up with a single through the left side, advancing Pittman to second. Emily Puckett laid down a SAC bunt to advance both Pittman and Durham. Bailey Lambertson stepped in to pinch hit for Skylar Conklin and would ground out for an RBI, scoring Pittman. Durham would score on a passed ball, to give the Pacers a 5-4 advantage.
  • A Cougar homerun in the top of the seventh inning would tie the game at six all, but the Pacers responded in the bottom of the seventh. With bases loaded, and two outs, Emily Puckett reached on an error by the short stop, for an RBI, bringing in the victory run, 6-5.

Pacer Top Performers for Game 1:
  • Candice Smith finished with two hits, one double, and one run.
  • Kristina Mojica went 2-4 at the plate.
  • Kristen Bailly finished with one homerun.
  • Mackenzie Ward earned the victory on the mound to open her 2019 season. Ward threw four strikeouts in two innings.

For the Foes for Game 1:
  • Anna Coleman finished with two hits, one double, one homerun, and one RBI.
  • Breanna Murphy went 2-4 at the plate.
  • Casey Cook went 2-3 with two RBI's.

Game 2:
  • Anna Coleman opened the second game of the day with a homerun over centerfield to give the Cougars a 1-0 start.
  • The Pacers would jump on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Emily Puckett lead off with a single up the middle.
  • Skylar Conklin laid down a SAC bunt, moving Puckett to second. Candice Smith drilled one down the left field line, scoring Puckett. Kristen Bailly followed suit with a double to right center, scoring Smith. The Pacers took the lead, 2-1 heading into the top of the fourth.
  • The Cougars would tie the game up in the top of the fourth inning, but the Pacers would respond in the bottom of the fourth as Kristina Mojica opened with a base hit to short stop. Nadia Pittman walked, and Emily Puckett laid down a sac bunt, moving runners to scoring position. Candice Smith stepped up and hit a double down the left field line, scoring Pittman and Mojica to take a 4-2 lead.
  • The Pacers would seal the win in the bottom of the sixth inning as Skylar Conklin hit an RBI single down the right field line to bring the Pacer lead to 5-2. The Cougars were unable to respond in the top of the seventh inning, as the Pacer finished with the sweep, 5-2.

Pacer Top Performers for Game 2:
  • Candice Smith lead the Pacers with two hits, three RBI's, and one double.
  • Emily Puckett finished with two hits.
  • Kristen Bailly finished with one double.
  • Danielle Hunt earned the win on the mound for the Pacers, throwing seven strikeouts and only giving up two hits and one earned run.

For the Foes for Game 2:
  • Anna Coleman finished with a homerun for the Cougars.
  • Hannah Thompson and Breanna Murphy both had one hit a piece.
  • Kaity Sullivan threw five strikeouts in two innings pitched.

What's Next?
The Pacers return to their home field on Sunday, March 23 against University of Lynchburg. The Pacers play the Hornets in a double header beginning at 1:30 p.m.
