Pacers Earn First Win of the Season On Day Two of Cougar Classic

Danville, VA -- The William Peace University volleyball team opened up their 2018 season at the Averett University Cougar Classic. On day two of the tournament, the Pacers were defeated by Southern Virginia in game one but powered in their second game to collect their first win of the year against Randolph College. This win marked the first career win for Nicole Barringer as a Head Coach.

Game 1 - A Challenging Battle

Southern Virginia's offense showed up in the early morning matchup versus the Pacers.. Kaely Rath collected 16 kills and Hailey Lohnes recorded 10 for the Knights through three sets. The Pacers battled through game one, falling just short of victory in each set. The Pacers would not trail by more than five points in all three sets.  With alternating leads, the Pacers took the third and final set to 31 points before falling to the Knights, 31-29 (0-3). Mya Parks led the Pacers with 10 kills, and freshman McLendyn Weathersby tallied 9. Emily Braxton lead the team with 29 digs.

Game 2 - The Pacer Offense Comes Alive

In set one, the Pacers opened up with a 4-0 run. Freshman, McLendyn Weathersby had back to back kills early in the first set accompanied by big kills from the veteran Mya Parks and sophomore Brienna Laskowski. Service aces proved to be big parts of the offensive scoring in game two, as the Pacers totaled seven aces against the Wildcats of Randolph College. William Peace would end up winning the first set (25-14).

Similar to the first set, the Pacer offense took an early lead. Brienna Laskowski dominated the floor with 12 kills. A big part of the hitters success today was the leadership of Sarah Scott who led the team with 21 assists. The defense in today's game was also a focal point in the Pacers first win of the season. Emily Braxton kept the ball off the ground with 21 digs. Set two would end, similar to the first with a final score of  25-13.

Set three was a hard fought victory. Randolph College jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. Brienna Laskowski tied the game at 10, with a momentum shifting kill and the Pacers would not trail for the remainder of the match. The Pacers went on to win set three, 25-21.

  • LaRee Crockett knotched a staggering 44 assists for the Knights.

The William Peace University volleyball team is back in action on September 7 at Brevard College at 12:00 p.m.
