Pacers Sweep Cougars in Virginia

Danville, VA -- The William Peace University baseball team continued USA South play against Averett University with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31. The Pacers who now improve to a record of 15-14, picked up a 7-5 win in the first game and a 9-2 win in the second game.

Game One
Pacer's Continue Quick Starts: The Pacers came out in the second game of the three-game series and got out to an early lead. In the top of the first inning, Sean Finneran started the game off with a walk. After advancing to second, and an Alec Allred single that sent Finneran to third, Christian Dix stepped up to bat. Dix hit a single to right field to score Finneran. One at bat later, Nathan Holt would earn a walk and load the bases. Up stepped Mikey Anerton who then got hit by a pitch earning another Pacer run. In the third inning, Alec Allred and Christian Dix singled and then both stole second and third. Nathan Holt would hit a sac fly scoring Allred. The Pacers surrendered runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth but were able to increase the 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth. The Pacers found themselves with runners on second and third with one out with Sean Finneran up to bat. Finneran went onto hit a single to take the Pacer lead to 5-2. The Cougars would get back into the game at 5-4 but the Pacers would score two runs in the eighth off good base-running by Easton Payton and Gavin Wheeler. The Cougars would score one more run but it would not be enough as Ben Brann closed the game out for the Pacers on the mound with a final score of 7-5.  Derek Jackson got the win for the Pacers pitching 5.2 innings. Ben Brann got the save closing out a Cougar late rally.

Game Two
Pacer Bats Explode: Easton Payton started game two off with a base hit. After making his way over to third base, Payton scored on a wild pitch and the Pacers took a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, Nathan Holt reached on a fielder's choice. Easton Payton stepped up next and hit a double scoring Holt. Payton would then steal third and advance home on a throwing error to increase the lead, 3-0.

In the top of the fifth with the Pacers leading 3-1, Payton bunted for a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Justin Torres worked a walk followed by an Alec Allred single which scored Payton. Torres would score off of a Christian Dix sac-fly. A Michael Sterne single followed by a Tyler Tilson RBI single would score Allred. Trey Hogan would get an RBI single scoring Sterne making the lead 7-1. Heading into the top of the seventh inning Allred started things off with a base hit and later scored off of a Michael Sterne single. In the eighth Parker Fernstrum singled, he scored later in the inning off of a throwing error. This would be the last run the Pacers got on the day as they won 9-2. Braxton Lamm started the game for the pitchers getting the win, throwing seven innings giving up only two runs with only one of the runs being earned. Cameron High and Jamey May came on for an inning each giving up no hits.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Pacers will be back in action on April 3, at 5:00 p.m. against Virginia State University. The non-conference matchup will be held at USA Baseball complex in Cary, NC. Virginia State comes into the contest with an overall record of 14-7-1.
