Baseball Picks up Convincing Win Over Falcons

Cary, NC-- The William Peace University baseball team defeated St. Augustine's University (8-3) on March 27th, 2018. The Pacers now improve to (12-14) overall.

Norris and Speight Lead Pacers to Win: Freshmen Jake Norris and John Speight helped secure the Pacer victory today, with Norris going 2 for 4 at the plate and Speight pitching the first five innings, allowing just one run and five hits. St. Augustine's would take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with Christian Dix and Nathan Holt giving WPU a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. The Pacers would add two more in the bottom of the 2nd on hits by Alec Allred and Easton Payton. Mikey Anerton would score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 3rd, with Gavin Wheeler singling to score Jake Norris to make it 6-1 WPU. Anerton would score on another wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth, while Cullen Cicotte would bring home Jake Norris to increase the Pacer lead to 8-1. The Falcons would add two runs in the top of the 7th to cut WPU's lead to 8-3. Neither team would add any more runs, with WPU closing the game out in the top of the ninth to win 8-3.

 

THE BREAKDOWN:

  • Jake Norris went 2 for 4 at the plate, scoring 3 of the Pacers runs

  • Mikey Anerton was 2 for 3 at the plate

  • Gavin Wheeler was 2 for 2 at-bat, scoring 1 run for the Pacers and tallying 1 RBI.

  • John Speight pitched 5 innings, allowing just one run and five hits with 4 strikeouts

  • DC Russ pitched one inning for the Pacers, allowing no runs or hits, and tallying three strikeouts.

  • Ben Brann closed out the game on the mound, also allowing no runs or hits.

THE FOES:

  • Hector Pichardo and Carson Davis were both 2 for 3 at-bat with .667 slugging percentages.

  • Brandon Bly went 1 for 3 while scoring 2 of the Falcons 3 runs.    

  • Avery Rosania started on the mound for St. Augustine's, pitching 3 innings and allowing 6 runs and 10 hits.

WHAT'S NEXT:

The Pacers will head to Danville, VA for a three game series against Averett University. The Cougars are currently (8-20) overall and (4-7) in the conference. Game one will take place on March 29th at 3 p.m.
