Softball Splits Double Header With Pride In Military Appreciation Game

RALEIGH, NC --  The William Peace University softball team hosted Greensboro College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, splitting the series with a victory in game one (4-3) and defeat in the second game (1-6). The Military Appreciation game began with honorary first pitches from WPU Assistant Softball Coach, Bernadette Cardon (U.S. Military Academy), and WPU Public Safety Officers, Frank Saraceno (Marines), and Larry Ellison (Army).

GAME ONE

Alexa Nemeth got the Pacers off to a good start in game one, as she homered to center field scoring Nadia Blevins, generating a score of  2-0 to finish the bottom of the first inning. The Pride would make a comeback in the top odf the fourth inning as a triple from Jasmine Worthy scored two. The Pride would advance one more to home plate concluding the top of the fourth inning (2-3).  

The Pacers continued to battle with the Pride in the fifth. Kristina Mojica would step up to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning and would crush a homer over the center field fence for a 2RBI, giving the Pacers the lead (4-3). An impressive defensive seventh inning from the Pacers would hold off the Prides' chances of scoring, to call the game at the top of the inning. The Pacers would finish with a victory defeating the Pride (4-3).

GAME TWO

In first inning, the Pacers kept with the Pride as Nadia Blevins hit a single and would score off a deep hit to right field by Kristina Mojica to tie the score at one (1-1) in the bottom of the first inning. As the Pacers continued to battle, they struggled to secure the game on the defensive end, allowing six runs out of twelve hits. The Pride got the job done on the mound as pitcher, Cheyanne Cox threw thirteen strikeouts. Danielle Hunt would relieve Alexa Nemeth in the fifth inning to strikeout two of the Pride in the top of the sixth giving the Pacers their final offensive break. The game would conclude in the Prides favor defeating the Pacers, 6-1.


THE BREAKDOWN
In game one, Kristina Mojica had one homerun while finishing 1-3 from the plate with 2 RBIs.
Alexa Nemeth also hit a 2 RBI homerun.
Nadia Blevins and Heather McLean went 2-3 at the plate in game one.
In game two, Nadia Blevins scored the only run for the Pacers and went 1-3 from the plate.


THE FOES
In game one, Cassie Collins hit 3-4 from the plate, and Jessica Worthy received 2 RBIs.
In game two, Cheyanne Cox pitched all seven innings collecting a total of 13 strikeouts.
In game two, Hayley Tickle went 4-4 from the plate, while Jessica Worthy and Melissa Garcia both finish 2-4 with 1 RBI.


WHAT'S NEXT
The Pacers continue USA South conference play against Averett University on March 18 at 1:00 pm in Raleigh, NC. The Cougars come into the contest at 7-15 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The quick turn around will also feature the WPU softball team's Pink Game.
