HOLLY SPRINGS, NC-- The William Peace University men's baseball team made program history with a sweep of Ferrum in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 10th. The Pacers, who now improve to a record of (11-8), picked up a (9-6) win in the first game and a (3-2) win in the second game.
GAME 1
Two Huge Innings Push Pacers Past the Panthers
The first game of the doubleheader saw the Pacers come out rolling on all cylinders. The Pacers were able to dispose of the Ferrum side after 3 quick outs to get out of the inning. The bats were active early & often as an Alec Allred triple brought Kyle Cramner & Easton Payton home to give the Pacers a quick 2-0 lead. Christian Dix would go on to add on to the Pacer lead after an RBI groundout brought Allred home.
The fourth inning began with the Panthers tying the game up at 3 heading into the bottom of the inning. To this point the Pacers had been unable to get a man on base since the 1st inning as things began to look bleak for the home club. An Aaron George RBI single started what would prove to be a huge inning for the Pacers. The 4-3 lead would quickly increase for the Pacers as Justin Torres, Kyle Cranmer, Nathan Holt & Alec Allred all registered hits. The 5 run inning proved to be too much for the Panthers as they would spend the rest of the game trying to claw back to no avail. Â Â Â
GAME 2
Strong Pitching & Fielding Prove to Be the Difference for Pacers
Luke Westmoreland took the mound in game 2 of the doubleheader and served as the guiding hand in a (3-2) victory for the Pacers. Westmoreland's evening started off rocky with a long first inning that saw Ferrum get on the board first after a ground out to first. The Pacers struggled to do Westmoreland any favors as 3 quick outs put him right back on the mound in the 2nd. The Pacer defense along with Westmoreland's sudden string of strikeouts carried the Pacers as their offensive struggled to find itself throughout the game. Â
After going down 2-0 in the 4th the Pacer bats woke in the bottom of the 5th. Mike Anerton was the first to cross home for the Pacers as a wild pitch that got past the catcher allowed him to trot home. The Pacers weren't finished scoring as Easton Payton notched his 9th RBI of the season, tying the game at 2. Both teams struggled through the next few innings as the game remained tied heading into the bottom of the 8th. Easton Payton lead off the inning with a single down the right field line to get himself on base. After an extended at bat Nick Tilley was able to put the Pacers on top with an RBI line drive past the shortstop. Tilley's RBI proved to be the game winner as the Pacers recorded 3 quick outs to end the game.
