Softball Goes 0-2 in Second Day of Grand Slam Tournament

Cary, NC -- The William Peace University softball team finished day two of the Grand Slam Triangle Classic with a loss to Wilson College (7-4) and a loss to Virginia Wesleyan (6-4).

Game One
Wilson College started the game off with a single up the middle, RBI; advancing a player to score the Phoenix' first run in the second inning. The Phoenix would score again off a walked, RBI, leaving the Pacers trailing 2-0 into the bottom of the second inning.

The Pacers and Phoenix continued to battle in the third and fourth with a series of quick outs for both teams. The Phoenix would answer back in the fifth inning as Jenna Carty homered to center field with one on base increasing the Phoenix lead, 4-0.

To enter the bottom of the sixth inning, Kristina Mojica would energize the Pacers, as she hit a double to right center that would advance Alexa Nemeth to third, and score Jordan Mangum to put the Pacers on the board trailing 4-1. The Pacers continued to fight back with a triple from Kacy Haithcock scoring both Alexa Nemeth and Hayley Waddell. A sac bunt from Lauren Conway would bring Kacy Haithcock home and tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the six inning. The Phoenix would cling the win in the seventh inning scoring three more runs to end the game, 7-4.  

Game Two
The Pacers faced the defending National Champs, Virginia Wesleyan,  in their second tournament game of the day. The Marlins established themselves on the board quickly with a home run by Madison Glaubke, followed by a single that advanced a runner home to lead 2-0. A sac fly to center field would score one more Marlin before the end of the inning. A quick inning at the plate for the Pacers would send them back to the field scoreless heading into the bottom of the second inning. An RBI by the Marlin's Kiersten Richardson would score another run for the Marlins. Glaubke would hit her second homer of the day with her second at-bat bringing the Marlin lead to 5-0. The Marlins would score their final run in the fifth inning before being slowed down by the Pacers.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Pacer presence emerged beginning with Alexa Nemeth being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. With the bases loaded a second time, Kristina Mojica would hit a single up the middle to score Jordan Mangum and Lauren Conway. An error by the centerfielder would score Alexa Nemeth and advance Kristina Mojica to second, bringing the Pacers within two (6-4). The Pacers' defense would keep the Marlins off the scoreboard heading into the top of the seventh. With two outs, Nadia Blevins would single to second base beating the throw to first to put one on for the Pacers. Blevins would be thrown out in her efforts to steal second, and the game would concluded 6-4 in favor of the Marlins.

THE BREAKDOWN

- In game one, both Nadia Blevins and Kacy Hatihcock had triples at the plate.
- Danielle Hunt closed the game, pitching 2 innings with two strikeouts.
- Alexa Nemeth pitched 6 innings for the Pacers with four strikeouts.
-In game two, Kristina Mojica went 2-2 at the plate with 2 RBI's.

THE FOES

- In game one, Jenna Carty and Jennifer Cail had homeruns for the Phoenix.
- In game two, Madison Glaubke went 2-5 at the plate with two homeruns.
- Teresa Cardamone and Hanna Hull pitched 2.0 and 2.2 innings respectively, with five strikeouts a piece.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Pacers wrap up the Grand Slam Triangle Classic tomorrow, February 25, with their first game at 12:00 p.m. against Hood College. The Pacers finish the tournament with their second game at 2:00 p.m. against Roanoke College.
