Pacers Fall Short Against Cougars

Danville, VA-- The William Peace Men's Basketball Team fell to Averett University 80-76.

The Averett Cougars would put the contest first point on the board.  The Pacers would not take long to answer as freshman standout Smith Gupton hit two back to back three pointers. The Pacers led for a majority of the half as Camden Ferguson and Tyson Sellers provided most of the offense for the Pacers in the half. William Peace gave up the lead with 4:24 remaining in the first half. Camden Ferguson made a long three pointer to regain the lead with 2:27 remaining but the Cougars quickly responded with a three pointer by Montre' Cash. With under a minute the two teams would trade baskets, sending the Pacers to the locker room down 36-32.

 

To start the second half Tyson Sellers would sink two free throws after an early foul by the Cougars. The two teams would again trade baskets as Brandon Baker for Averett responded  with a long three pointer followed by a Camden Ferguson's three pointer to pull the Pacers within 2 points. Averett would take a 8 point lead with 16:12 remaining in the second half when Timothy Henry drained a jump shot. The Pacers were trailing by one point with 13:43 remaining in the game. Mikal Gaylord would put the Pacers ahead after back to back layups and a couple of free throws (12:55). William Peace went ahead by 8 points with a Camden Ferguson three pointer. Down the stretch, there would be multiple lead changes as both teams fought hard. In the final minutes, the Pacers were within two points multiple times but could not hang on as Averett went ahead 4 points with .8 seconds remaining in the game.

 

The Recap:

  • Mikal Gaylord has another impressive night leading the Pacers with 19 points.  He also collected 5 rebounds and was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

  • Tyson Sellers would add 12 points and 6 boards.

  • Camden Ferguson was 5-11 behind the arch scoring 17 points and had 5 rebounds.

The Foes:

  • James Contreras Jr. scored 23 points and had 5 rebounds for the Cougars.

  • Darin Kenter would finish the game with 7 rebounds and 15 points.

 

What's Next:

The William Peace University Men's Basketball Team will be back in action on February 15 as they host Averett University in their last home game of the season. Averett now has a record of (13-11) and the Pacers have a record of (6-17).
