Pacers Start Conference Play With Win Over Pride

Raleigh, NC--- The WIlliam Peace University men's basketball team opened up conference play with a (82-71) victory over the Pride of Greensboro College.

The William Peace Pacers took an early lead as Mikal Gaylord squeezed a tight pass through to Trey Bryant for a beautiful layup. Although the Pacers put points on the board first, Greensboro College put the pressure on the Pacer defense. Carmoni Marks was the Greensboro leading scorer and put four points on the board in a hurry. The Pride would take an early (6-2) lead. Samuel Arnold hit a three pointer early in hopes of sparking the slow start from the offense. Both offenses would be held as the score would remain 13-9 for two minutes. Tre McLean had an impressive and-one play in traffic to get the Pacers' offense going. The Pacers took the lead with a timely fast break layup by Smith Gupton (21-20) with 5:52 left in the first half. Justin Minnis had a mid range jumper putting the Pride up by one with 4:43 left in the first half. Donolly Tyrell Jr. put himself in the scoring column with an aggressive layup in the paint. This gave the Pacers a 25-24 lead with under three minutes remaining. Tre McLean would finish the scoring in the first half with two free throws. Greensboro had possession of the ball for the final shot but the Pacer defense would force a turnover. The score headed into the locker room would favor the Pacers (31-28).

In the second half, William Peace came out firing and would go on a (11-2) run which would be started by a big and-one play by the freshman Pacer, John Ingram. Smith Gupton would follow with a three pointer. Trey Bryant would follow with two layups, the last of which would be a three point play to extend the Pacer's lead (42-30). Greensboro College was shut down early in the second half as the Pacers defense would come up with timely stops. John Ingram showed off his athleticism with an amazing rebound off the shot by Tyson Sellers and scored on the put back. Keyshawn Dorsey's jump shot would cut the Pacers lead. Tre McLean would answer right back and kept the scoring alive with a deep three pointer. Trey Bryant would cap this run by the Pacers with an electrifying dunk to give the Pacers a (51-32) lead.  The Pride would cut the Pacer's lead as Carmoni Marks gathered his thirteenth point in hopes of slowing down the red hot offense of the Pacers. Justin Minnis would drain a big three pointer to get the Pride to forty points. Trey Bryant responded with a deep three of his own making the Pacer lead (54-40). Smith Gupton heated up in the second half and added his point total to eleven with back to back three pointers. Trey Bryant played impressive defense and got the crowd on their feet with a huge block. The Pacers would be in control and lead (78-62). The red hot offense from the Pacers was too much to contain as they would pull away and get the win making it two in a row. In tonight's game, the final score was (82-71).

The Recap:

-Trey Bryant ties the school record for the second time this season with 17 rebounds. He also collected 19 points leading the Pacers in scoring.

-Tyson Sellers tallied 13 points with nine of them being from behind the arch.

-John Ingram, first year Pacer put 13 points on the board.

-Tre McLean finished with 4 rebounds and 10 points.

The Foes:

-Carmoni Marks, the leading scorer for the Pride tallied a team leading 23 points and had 7 rebounds.

-Justin Minnis had 13 points with three rebounds going 4 for 9 from the field.

What's Next?

The William Peace University men's basketball is back in action looking for their third win in a row as they host conference rival, Brevard College on Saturday, December 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 P.M in the Hermann Athletic Center. Brevard comes to Raleigh with a 2-3 record and the Pacers improve to 3-3 with tonight's big win over the Greensboro College Pride.
