Men's Basketball Falls to Generals in Home Opener

Raleigh,NC- - The William Peace University men's basketball team was in action on November 11 against Washington and Lee University. This game marks the start of the 2018-2019 season for the Pacers.

WPU looked to set the tone early in the game. Tre McLean was fouled and hit one of two free throws to get the Pacers on the board. Tyson Sellers followed with a long three pointer. Washington and Lee would respond with an offensive run led by Curtis Mitchell and Devin Kearns. They would extend the lead (12-4). Trey Bryant was an offensive nightmare for the Generals pulling down eight rebounds in the first half with five of those being offensive boards. Late in the first, the Generals put together a crafty inbound alley-oop to Roy McMillian to boost their momentum. The first half would come down to the wire and the Pacers would come within one point of the lead as the first period came to a close.

In the second half, Smith Gupton put the Pacers ahead early with a deep three pointer. The Generals would share the lead a couple of times early in the half but would begin to pull away late down the stretch. Bryant continued to pull down offensive boards for the Pacers and had many put back layups to keep the Pacers heart beating. Alex Starr would respond to a small Pacer push and keep the Generals up by ten.  Mikal Gaylord had a few offensive tip ins late in the game that would keep the Pacers within reach. As time ticked off the clock, the Pacers were forced to foul in the final minute of play. The Pacers would come up just short in the game, falling, 75-85, but will be back in action later this week to look for their first win this season.

The Recap: The Foes:
  • Roy McMillan scored 33 points with 11 rebounds.
  • Devin Kearns and William Brueggeman both put up 13 points.
  • The Generals shot 42.3% from the field leading them to a victory.
