Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Career High Game for Pacers Ends Just Shy of Victory Against Bishops

Raleigh, NC-- The William Peace University women's basketball team fell to NC Wesleyan 93-89, on Sunday afternoon in an electric battle between two high-intensity teams. The Pacers and Bishops went back and forth early in the first half, however, N.C. Welseyan headed into the half-time break with a 47-39 lead. N.C. Wesleyan shot 6 of 9 from three point range in the first half alone. Mikayla Ray lead the Pacers with 22 points going 6-7 from the field and 10-10 from the freethrow line. The Pacers shot 14-28 (50%) while NC Wesleyan went 20-41 (52.55).

In the second half the Pacers came out with a bang! WPU came out with a 6-1 run within the first three minutes of the third quarter. An aggressive Bishop team would not be shaken however as they would answer back with multiple runs of their own. With the Bishops up by nine points to start the fourth quarter, WPU began to chip away at the Bishops' lead. The Pacers would get within one point of the Bishops on four occasions, but late turn overs and an inability to shut down the Bishop offense would solidify the N.C. Wesleyan win in the final seconds of play as the Bishops took the victory 93-89. The Pacers shot an impressive 6 of 11 from three point range in the second half. Mikayla Ray lead all scorers with 40 points going 11-16 from the floor and 18-18 from the free throw line. Ray has now scored the second-most points in a single game in program history with this 40 point game falling just two points shy of the first place record held by Peace alumni, Tia Saunders ('04). Ray also lead the team with 15 rebounds. DeJah Cheatham went 10-17 and scored 23 points for the Pacers while Shaniya Taylor went 4-8 from three point range and scored 15 points.
