Pacers Secure Victory in Final Minutes Against Panthers

Raleigh, N.C. -- The William Peace University men's basketball team defeated Ferrum College on Saturday, December 16, in their second conference game of the season. The Pacers (1-1) defeated the Panthers 83-80.

Mikal Gaylord put up the first points of the game off of a steal from Tyson Sellers. After that, Ferrum would take a 3-2 lead and continued to lead for the rest of the first half. The Panthers never led by a margin more than 10, when they led 14-4 at the 13:38 minute mark. Maurice Canady and Tre McLean would cut the Ferrum lead to just two points with 10:12 left in the first from Canady's consecutive three-pointers and McLean going 2 for 2 from the free-throw line. Ferrum took an 8-point (26-18) lead with 5:50 remaining in the first, but McLean and Canady, again, quickly cut the lead back down to 26-24 with consecutive shots from behind the arc. The rest of the first half stayed close as the Pacers would head into halftime trailing 34-32, with Mikal Gaylord sinking a three at the buzzer.

In the second half, WPU would grab a 35-34 lead on a three-pointer from Tyson Sellers, but the Panthers would take their lead back off a couple foul shots at 17:34. The Pacers would tie it up 47-47 at 13:28 on a three from Tyson Sellers, and then take a four-point lead on a layup from Trey Bryant at 11:43. At 8:02, the Pacers increased their lead to 65-59 on a 3-pointer from Tyson Sellers. WPU ran into some foul trouble, totaling 10 fouls in the second half,  which gave Ferrum a chance to close in on the Pacer lead. The Panthers took back a 69-67 lead with four minutes remaining in regulation. Sellers quickly tied it back up at the foul line, and Bryant would give the Pacers back a 72-69 lead at 3:14. Ferrum would get within 1 point of WPU (81-80) with 2.4 left on the clock, but Sellers would sink two foul shots to give the Pacers the win.
