Box Score Buies Creek, N.C. -- The William Peace University women's basketball team faced off in a tough non-conference matchup on Friday night against the Campbell University Camels. The Pacers fell to the Camels 42-94 in a match-up that proved to be a tough test, but also a good learning experience for a young Pacer team.
Campbell grabbed the first points of the game with a three, then continued to put points on the board. The Pacers were able to break momentum for a while drawing in two fouls by Mikayla Ray and Whitney Walker making the score 4-19. Campbell continued to push forward on offense for the rest of the first quarter. The Pacers found their way to line often in the first and ended the quarter with DeJah Cheatham sinking two finishing the quarter 8-25.
In the second quarter the Pacers managed to put some more points on the board with #11 Whitney Walker knocking down a three, putting the score at 11-28. Campbell immediately reacted and put up 6 points in a row before Jayde Grant hit a mid-range jump shot. The second quarter came to a close with Campbell up 16-56.
In the third quarter the Pacers put up more points and seemed to gain some momentum but were unable to catch up to a hot offensive Campbell team who would add another 24 points. The Camels were dominate in the paint for the majority of the game finishing with 44 points in the paint. In the fourth quarter the Pacers came in on the attack and out scored Campbell 16-14. The final score on the night 42-94, in favor of the Camels.
Whitney Walker led the Pacers with 12 points, while Mikayla Ray finished the night with her first double-double of the season with a team leading 13 rebounds and 11 points. Deja Umstead had a good outing finishing with 11 points on the night. The Pacers finished shooting 78.9% from the line.
The Pacers now look ahead to November 20th, when they will take on Pfeiffer University at home. The game will be held on Monday at 5:30 p.m at the Hermann Athletic Center. William Peace University will be honoring a special member of Athletics with a court dedication ceremony at 5:00 p.m. The first 75 fans to arrive will receive a commemorative t-shirt to celebrate the event.
