Men's Soccer Senior Day Goes to Double Overtime

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C -- The WPU men's soccer team honored their seniors with an aggressive battle against Covenant College on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers went into two overtimes but would fall just short of victory as the Scots sealed the deal with a goal in the 103rd minute. The game concluded with the final score being 2-1.

Seniors Christian Ortiz, Ryan Von Werne, Kevin Amaya, Chris Deleon, Johnathan Upton, Seth Cranford, Isaac Kruger, and Ryan Appleyard were all honored at mid-field before the game began and made their start to begin the game. Senior, Isaac Kruger, despite his shoulder injury, was able to start the game and was able to sub out before competitive play began.

In the first half, the ball went back and forth. The Pacers had several opportunities on their end of the field but were unable to find the back of the net.

The second half started with a goal by senior, Kevin Amaya, off an error by the Scots. The Pacers defense kept battling the Scots but Covenant managed to answer with a goal in the 54th minute. With the game tied, the Pacers headed into the first 10 minute overtime. After an aggressive extra period, the score remained 1-1 and thus the Pacers headed into the second overtime period. Despite a tough battle, the Scots found an opportunity in the 103rd minute as a ball was headed by Covenant's Josh Brower and was tipped by a defender and found it's way into the upper left corner. The game ended after 103 minutes of play, 2-1.

Senior, goalkeeper Christian Ortiz had 11 saves. The Pacers took 19 shots with Senior, Chris Deleon with 4 shots.

The Pacers are now (6-11-1) overall and (2-7-1) in conference. The final game of the season for the Pacers will be Wednesday, October 25, against Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Pride of Greensboro College are (13-4) overall and (8-1) in conference play.
