Men's Soccer Surrenders Pair of Penalty Kicks in 2-1 Loss at Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, VA – Following a 10-0 win against Warren Wilson in their season opener, the William Peace University men's soccer team squared off against Southern Virginia on Saturday, where the Pacers fell by the score of 2-1 after surrendering  a pair of second half penalty kicks.

Brandon Zapata broke a scoreless tie, burying the first penalty shot in the 73rd minute, and then capitalized on penalty shot number two in the 85th minute.

The Pacers (1-1) appeared to cut the lead in half a couple minutes later on what would have been a goal from Ja'Rod Randolph, but it was called back due to a questionable offsides call. Randolph had another look at the goal in the final minute until SVU's keeper received a red card for taking him out. Chris Deleon scored his third goal of the season on the resulting free kick, but with only a few ticks remaining, the Knights (1-1) were able to run out the clock and secure the victory.

"We did a lot of good things, executed pretty well overall and stayed organized defensively, but we had a couple mental lapses that ended up costing us," said head coach Caleb Husmann. "It's especially frustrating knowing we outplayed them for a good portion of the game, but you're not going to win many games when you give up two penalty kicks."

The WPU men's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 5:00 p.m., hosting Eastern Mennonite University.
