RALEIGH, NC – Four home runs and a 10-run bottom of the fourth propelled the William Peace University softball team to a 14-0 win over Averett University in their first of two games Saturday afternoon, as the Pacers punched their ticket to the USA South conference tournament next weekend in Rocky Mount.
Game One: William Peace 14, Averett 0 (F/5)
Brittany Propri led the charge with her nation leading 10th and 11th home runs of the season, a pair of two run shots in the third and fourth innings. Heather Mclean added a two-run dinger in the third, her fourth of the season.
Lindsey Coley highlighted the Pacers' 10-run fourth with an opposite-field three-run homer, her second this spring.
Morgan Farmer (14-5) earned the complete-game shutout, surrendering two hits and striking out five. Farmer collected as many hits as she gave up, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Mary Beth Smith (15-7) was pinned with the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits, a walk and three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Kristyn Owen didn't fare well in relief, giving up eight earned on seven hits in two thirds of an inning.
Smith and Taylor Dix were the only Averett players to record a hit.
Game Two: Averett 17, William Peace 8
Caroline Womble and Propri put the Pacers ahead, 4-2, with a pair of RBI singles in the fourth, but the Cougars scored nine runs in the six and went on to win, 17-8.
Despite 15 hits, their second highest total of the season, WPU finished the game with a season high 14 runners left on base. The Pacers (23-15, 11-7 USAS) didn't do themselves any favors defensively either, committing four errors that led to seven unearned runs.
Farmer was one of five Pacers to register multiple hits, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in.
Morgan Bryant went 2-for-3, scored twice and knocked two runs home. Bryant launched her sixth home run of the year in the second, which ranks her fifth in the USA South. Coley finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
Lindsey Wiggins added two hits and scored twice, while Propri also had a pair of hits, scored a run and drove in another.
Kelsey Durham (4-9) was tacked with the loss in relief of Farmer, who gave up six runs (two earned) on six hits, six walks and three strikeouts in four innings. Durham's final line was nine runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks in two innings of work.
After taking the loss in game one, Smith (16-7) bounced back and went the distance to earn the win in game two. Smith gave up eight earned on 15 hits, five walks and five strikeouts, as the Cougars improve to 21-14 with a 13-5 mark in conference play.
Smith helped her cause at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jessica Long had two hits, scored three runs and four RBIS, breaking the game open with a grand slam in the sixth.
The WPU softball team closes out the regular season on Sunday, hosting Maryville College for two games starting at 1:00 p.m. The Pacers will also recognize seniors
