LYNCHBURG, VA – The William Peace University softball team traveled to Lynchburg College Sunday afternoon, where the Pacers dropped a pair of one-run games by scores of 4-3 and 8-7.
Game One: Lynchburg 4, William Peace 3WPU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with home runs from
Morgan Farmer and
Heather McLean, but the Pacers wouldn't push another run across the rest of the game. Lynchburg chipped away and won on Mackenzie Chitwood's walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh.
Farmer (13-5) started in the circle and went the distance, giving up four runs on seven hits, four walks and five strikeouts.
Conner English (8-7) earned the win in relief of starter Kirsten Copley, who only retired two batters in the first and allowed all three WPU runs. English held the Pacers scoreless in 6.1 innings of work on four hits, three walks and nine strikeouts.
Chitwood finished with two hits and two RBIs after knocking Kayla St. John home with a double in the third. St. Johns added a home run in the first. Brittany Coffey tied the hit a solo shot in the sixth.
Game Two: Lynchburg 8, William Peace 7The Pacers (22-14) rallied with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make it a 7-7 game. Lynchburg won it in the bottom half of the inning though, as Chitwood singled to lead off and reached third with one out after Logan Walker doubled down the line. Taylor Belknap pinch ran for Chitwood and scored on a sac fly from Gaby Solomita.
Lindsey Wiggins recorded her second multi-hit game of the day and drove in five runs with a two-run double in the second and three-run bomb in the sixth, her conference leading ninth home run of the season.
Morgan Bryant went 3-for-4, scored twice and drove in another. McLean also had two hits and scored a run in the seventh.
Kelsey Durham (4-8) was tacked with the loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits and five strikeouts in five-and-a-third.
English (9-7) picked up her second win of the day in relief of Brittani Piazza, who gave up five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. English tossed 2.1 innings and gave up two runs on three hits, four walks and a strikeout.
Walker finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Four other Lynchburg players recorded two hits apiece.
The WPU softball team closes out the regular season with a pair of conference doubleheaders this weekend against Averett and Maryville.
