Pacers Pinned with Conference Opening Loss

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – The William Peace University baseball team hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to North Carolina Wesleyan for their USA South opener. The Pacers generated a season high 13 hits but left 14 on base, as the Battling Bishops went on to win, 8-4.

Three players collected multiple hits for WPU, including Tyler Tilson, who hit the first home run in program history as part of a 3-for-4 day. Tilson's dinger gave the Pacers an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Nick Cole was aboard after doubling to lead off the inning.

Mikey Anerton finished the game 4-for-5 with a run scored in the third.  Anerton has notched a hit in 13 games (out of 15) this season and reached base safely in all but one. Anerton still managed to contribute an RBI in the only game he didn't reach base back on February 10 against Guilford.

Alex Scott went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Scott plated Easton Payton in the eighth, who led off with a single to left. Brian Willis also registered a hit for the fourth game in a row.

Trevor Pence (1-2) started and was tacked with the loss for WPU (7-8, 0-1 USAS), giving up eight runs on 11 hits, two walks and six strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Chase Roupp tossed a scoreless two-and-a-third, while Aron Crumb pitched the ninth and struck out two.

All nine players for NC Wesleyan (11-5, 3-1 USAS) in the starting lineup recorded a hit, while five different Battling Bishops had two hits apiece.

Ryan Grant (4-0) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits, two walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Joseph Borgdering threw the final four innings and held the Pacers to a run on four hits and three strikeouts.

The WPU Baseball team will be back in Rocky Mount tomorrow for game two of their three-game series at 1:00 p.m.

Live Stats will be available for the contest.
